Mission & History

 About Us

Three Scale Research is a nonprofit organization that seeks to educate individuals about geography, health, history, and ecology through the production of interactive video and audio maps. We produce highly engaging interactive maps utilizing video, image galleries, and audio.

Founded in 2009 by a small team of geographers, we received 501(c)(3) nonprofit tax-exempt status in 2011. Since then, we have worked on contracted projects and grants with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, The Ohio State University, the John and Christine McChesney Foundation, the Sandusky County Economic Development Corporation, and the Ohio Environnmental Protection Agency.

Unlike traditional static maps that are used for navigation purposes, the interactive quality of our maps engages users with discovery and unexpected learning content. We promote our educational maps as freely available to the general public through the Internet and digital embedding. To date, we have made thousands of maps and posted over 60 map stories on a variety of topics.

Current GOALS

  • We will create an interactive map featuring a specific wetland area in all 50 states and create 12 interactive wetlands maps over the course of the current fiscal year.
  • We will create six interactive maps to tell historical stories that are important to the state of Ohio.
  • We will create six interactive health maps to serve and educate the central Ohio community about various health topics and community resources.

Recent Accomplishments

  • We completed our Ohio Wetlands Interactive Map to build learning and appreciation of Ohio’s wetland resources in alignment with Ohio’s state curriculum standards for students in grades 5-6.
  • We supported the promotion of educational interactive mapping resources in our community and successfully launched a blog to support the promotion of our free, accessible interactive maps.
  • We successfully launched a Kickstarter fundraiser to fund the Ripley Ohio Underground Railroad Interactive Map.
